A Practical Guide to Form 24Q: What Every Finance Team Should Know

Form 24Q is the quarterly TDS return every employer deducting tax at source on salaries has to file. On paper, it's a defined form with defined fields. In practice, it's often the most time-consuming recurring task on a finance team's calendar.

Where The Time Actually Goes

The form itself takes minutes to fill in once the numbers are right. The time goes into getting the numbers right: reconciling TDS deducted against declared investments, matching PAN details across employee records, and catching mismatches between what was calculated at the start of the year and what actually happened by the quarter's end (revisions, mid-year joiners, bonus payouts).

The Fix Is Upstream, Not At Filing Time

Most of the reconciliation pain is a symptom of TDS being calculated separately from where declarations and salary revisions are recorded. If IT declarations, TDS regime selection, and every salary revision flow into the same system that generates payslips, the Form 24Q numbers are already reconciled by the time the quarter closes — the export is the last step, not the whole project.

What "Already Reconciled" Looks Like

A Form 24Q export generated directly from the same reconciled payroll data that produced every payslip that quarter — not assembled from scratch against a separate declarations spreadsheet.
